Sheffield Wednesday's roots go back to 4 September 1867, when members of The Wednesday Cricket Club met at the Adelphi Hotel in Sheffield to form a football side. The club took its name from the day of the week on which its founding members had a half-day off work — Wednesday. 'Sheffield' was not added to the name until 1929. Wednesday played their first football match in October 1867, beating the Mechanics Club at Norfolk Park. The cricket and football sides split permanently in 1882. The Owls moved to Hillsborough in 1899 and won four First Division titles — the last in 1930 — and three FA Cups.
